Tooth discoloration?: Coffee, tea and smoking are the biggest culprits for causing external staining of teeth. Natural teeth do tend to get darker over time as the enamel thins exposing more of the internal dentin of the tooth which is darker. Traumatic blows to teeth can cause internal staining. Amalgam fillings tend to leak resulting in dark graying of teeth. Teeth can decalcify from acids produced by food & bacteria.
