Usually minimal pain: I've been personally placing dental implants since 1989 and I have never had a patient who had so much pain they needed to go to the er, by ambulance, no less. That's not to say that it doesn't happen, just not that common. There may have been a complication with the surgery. Hopefully all is well by now.

Very rare: I've been placing implants since 1985 and severe pain associated with the surgery or the healing is very unusual. Tooth extraction is more painful afterwards than implant placement afterwards. The average patient in my practice takes a few days of Motrin with some people needing stronger meds for the first day. I suspect there may be more to the story than 2 routine implants.

The facts?: I have been practicing for over 40 years & have never heard of anything close to what you describe. Most patients have mild to moderate pain following the procedure, & a few perhaps more severe that prescribed pain medication handles adequately. Personally i would not attribute the placement of dental implants to what you surmise from overheard comments. I'd bet some part of this story is missing.
