Nasal spray: I assume you are talking about an over the counter decongestant nasal spray? The effect will usually wear off in a few weeks. Prescription nasal sprays on the other hand do not cause dependence but your nasal symptoms will recur if you stop it.

Nasal sprays.: Side effects of long term use of nasal sprays depends on the ingredient. 1) decongestants like neo-synephrione = more prolonged nasal congestion 2) Normal Saline = almost nil 3) steroids = possible atrophy of the turbinates; easy bleeding 4) antihistamines = sedation, loss of effect.

Nasal Spray Risks: Otc sprays (afrin, etc.) are very addicting and should only be used on rare occasions. The prescription steroid sprays can cause crusting, blleding and in rare cases a septal perforation. There may be problems to address directly (sinusitis, allergies, deviated septums, etc.) see an ENT specialists for answers.
