Gums receding: It is possible, you are killing the cells that help heal the area. You also may get a dry socket, which is very painful and sometimes requires going back into the site. So better not to smoke.

Impaired healing: If the oral surgery involved cutting the gum, smoking does compromise the healing so the cut from surgery may not heal right which may cause receded gum line.
