Same Thing: Gerd is gastro-esophageal reflux disease - the medical name for acid refulux. Gerd is generally assigned when someone has frequent problems and seeks treatment. An occasional bought after a heavey or spicy meal may be treated with antacids or just letting it pass. Long-term problems call for meds that are taken regualarly - either over the counter or prescribed. Talk to your md if it is frequent.

Cause vs effect: Gerd is what happens if acid reflux continues long enough to create symptoms. The intensity of GERD symptoms is correlated with the amount of damage. Everyone has the potential to backwash some of their stomach acid (reflux). This is aggravated if you lay down after a meal or consume caffeine, nicotine ir acidic foods. Treatment can be as simple as stopping aggravating factors and or adding meds.
