What is the difference between gerd and acid reflux?

3 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

GERD: Stands for gastro esophageal reflux disease, gastric contents are almost always acidic, so gerd is basically the same as acid reflux. Treatment for this condition is reducing the amount of acid in the stomach, reducing the amount of the volume of reflux, reducing the amount of time there is reflux, or any two or all three. There are meds, mechanical means, and operations to accomplish them.

Essentially the same: Laryngopharyngeal reflux will fall under acid reflux but would technically not be gerd. Many patients suffer from both gerd & lprd.
