Any physician: Any licensed physician or allied health professional under such a person's supervision can incise and drain an extremely large cyst. Please follow up with effective treatment for the disease itself.

In a situation where you can see a dermatologist or someone else experienced, this is your best choice. In an urgent situation, where this is not available, incision and drainage would be adequate. I would not trust a generalist to know when to inject with a glucocorticoid and when not to. Thanks Dr. Lee for the opportunity to clarify.

Experience counts: Some cysts can be injected with kenalog (triamcinolone) (steroid) while others may need incision or drainage, and some may need surgical excision. If it's not treated correctly it can leave a bad scar or even make the cyst worse or infected. Make sure the practitioner you see has a lot of experience treating cysts.
