Rarely occurs: Most cases, retinopathy does not cause detachment. This happens usually when the diabetic retinopathy is so severe that hemorrhage and scarring develop that causes the retina to be pulled up with the scar tissue. By then, patients will usually have been followed by a retinal specialist.
