Many ways: The eustachian tube connects the very back of your nose to the middle ear. This tube is generally collapsed shut at rest and must be opened to allow the pressure to equalize in the ear. The tensor tympani muscle passes around the opening of this tube and when contracted helps to keep it open. You can do this by swallowing, yawning, chewing gum, or attempting to blow out your nose while swallowi.
