Not necessarily: Many suffer from low back pain. Symptoms related to back pain which need emergent attention include fever/chills, leg weakness (leg can't move or drags), change in bowel or bladder control (inability to pee or poop). If the pain is 10 out 10, one may also go for urgent pain relief in the er. Heat/ice/back stretches are all good initial treatment for non-urgent pain. Call doc if not better.

Umpredictable: Lower back pain is recurrent most of time. There is concern when it is severe or when there is a possibility of cancer or severe nerve or cord damage or when vertebral fractures are recent or acute.
