Varicose veins: Varicose veins have a genetic predisposition and hormonal influence. Standing or sitting for long periods without moving the calves, wearing elastic bands (corses, pantyhose, tight underwear or increasing the abdominal pressure )at the groin or abdomen, pregnancies, use of birth control hormones ( pill, injection, ring or patch), clots in the deep venous system contribute to increase collaterals.

Probably: Sitting relatively immobile for long periods might cause varicose veins & definitely can aggravate them. It also creates an increased risk of blood clots, particularly after a few hours. Pregnancy is indeed another risk for all the above. A phlebologist or other physician experienced in vein treatment can probably eliminate your varicose veins with office procedures.

Worse during pregnan: Lack of activity including prolonged sitting can lead to venous hypertension. If venous insufficiency is present in addition then varicosities may become more pronounced. Pregnancy due to the physical placement of the gravid uterus on the vena cava increases venous resistance and makes the lower extremity varicose veins more pronounced. These will recurr with each pregnancy unless treated.

Yes: Yes, increased pressure on the venous system during long drives or pregnancy can worsen the varicosities.

No: Varicose veins are mostly an inherited problem that we think relates to the relative strength of the vein tissue and is made worse by prolonged exposure to gravity pressure on the venous valves. Riding in a car would have little to do with causing varicose veins. The hormones of pregnancy can further weaken these veins and are responsible for the increase in varicosities seen during pregnancy.

Due to pregnancy: Varicose veins of the lower extremities can have various sources-pregnancy is one. The varicose veins are a result of pooling of blood with increased venous blood pressure. The source varicose veins can be determined on physical exam and a focus venous ultrasound examination by a physician skill in treating venous disease. All about valves.: Varicose veins are due to malfunctioning (refluxing) valves in the saphenous system. Inactivity and dependency decreases the leg calf pump which increased the venous pressure to increase varicose veins. If you have varicose veins then you should have them evaluated by a vein specialist and you should have a venous reflux ultrasound before they worsen.
