On awakening?: Pain on the bottom of the foot, and bottom of the heel, worse on first steps is often plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the thick lining on the bottom of the foot): rx'd with stretching, anti-inflammatories. Other problems could be fractures, neuromas (painful nerve swellings), less likely referred pain from sciatica (infammation of nerves in back). See your doc.

Foot pain: Many things can cause the type of pain that you described. I would recommend evaluation by a podiatrist.
