Guarded: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a complex heart defect. Untreated babies will not survive. Treatment requires either a heart transplant or a series of surgical procedures. Survival has improved and in many centers 85-90% of newborns will survive the first surgery. However, their hearts are not "fixed", and they will require lifelong cardiology care. Five year survival is 60-70%. It is improving.
