Idea 1660s-animals,: People often died, blood types not known of until early 1900s, 1st crossmatched transfusion 1907, british red cross credited w/first formal donation 1921. 1st blood bank 1930s, us established program 1940-red cross program start 1941 in time for wwii. 1970s volunteer-based donor system & disease testing.
