The main thing is to be certain the diagnosis is correct; in can be difficult to distinguish this from infections like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or ovarian abscess. Potentially helpful tests include STD testing, pelvic ultrasound, CT scan, sometimes MRI or laparoscopy. Whether you need to "advocate" for yourself depends on your doctor and your relationship with her or him. Good luck.

Since there can be many reasons for these symptoms the best thing is to consult a good Gyn and lether/him decide what tests would be the best Good lu ck
