Depends on a lot: This depends greatly on which tendon, degree of tear, and functional goals of the patient. At best, some tears can be managed with pain control and rest, similar to a muscle strain; complete tears or tears in muscles bearing high loads may require surgery. Often physical therapy will be a component of the plan, as will antiinflammatories and rest.

It depends: Treatment of a torn tendon often depends on the severity of the injury. A complete tear generally needs surgery, while a less extensive injury may respond to a period of rest and splinting. Occasionly only pain control is needed if the tendon is not absolutely essential. All cases require physical therapy to restore strength and function. An ortopedist usually makes the decision on how to proceed.
