A member asked:

Will my long lasting diabetes eventually result in pancreatic cancer? what percentage of patients eventually have pancreatic cancer after having long, lasting diabetes?

Pancreatic cancer is still considered rare . Genetics, age, smoking, obesity are greater risk factors than T2DM. The articles I read (The Lancet, Jan 2023) suggests new-onset T2DM is a greater risk factor than long-standing T2DM. There aren't enough studies looking at diabetes duration and pancreatic cancer risk. Yes, there is an increased risk, but hardly enough to say it is an eventuality.

Long lasting diabetes is not the single pathway to pancreatic cancer. It is possible that what caused diabetes may predispose to cancer; however most people with diabetes mellitus do not develop pancreatic cancer.
