A member asked:

Are pancreas transplants done for patients with pancreatic cancer?

No/not at this time.: These are not routinely done at this time. The patients are usually old, and by the time this is diagnosed, it is usually too advanced, and far spread for such a transplant to be of use. Now there may be a chance of one done if this is contained in just the pancreas, but this is rare, and pancreatic transplant is rarely, if at all done.

No: Not currently done because the risk that there is disease outside the pancreas is too high.

Transplant for ca: No. Pancreas transplantation is for type 1 dm, usually with a kidney transplant.. If you have pancreas cancer and are a candidate for resection, then this can be accomplished and the pancreas does not need to be replaced. The last thing you would want while dealing with a pancreas cancer is the requirement for immunosuppression, which would encourage cancer growth.
