Does lisine (its a pill) really help to prevent cold sores? if not, what prevents them? i use abreeva for a break out but i want to prevent them. help

There are multiple meds available - acyclovir, ganciclovir, vartrex to name 3 that can be taken as preventives or at the onset of a cold sore to keep them from coming on. While lysine may reduce them in some people nothing without a script has been shown to work for everyone.

Antiviral medication: can help w prevention. Your Dr can prescribe oral valtrex or another antiviral medication. Laser txs are also used to treat cold sores. Melissa Officinalis or lemon balm (cream) expedite healing of cold sores. It can reduce healing time by 1/2. Studies also show that regular use can help v recurrences. Brief supplementation w lysine 1,000mg orally 3 times a day at onset, can also hasten healing.
