Antiviral : Cold sores are caused by herpes virus that resides in the nerve. Some anti-viral medications may help lessen the severity if used early. If you can feel the cold sore coming - prodromal sign - tingling sensation in the usual spot you get cold sores - apply the med to lessen severity. Carefully see what triggers a flare up. Sun light, certain foods, stress etc. And try to avoid these triggers.

Oral antiviral: Topical application of an antiviral is of questionable value, however you can get a prescription from your physician or dentist for valcyclovir 1g 1 tablet a day which must be taken when the prodromal symptoms appear. Keep them on hand because if you wait until you feel the symptoms it will probably be too late for the medicine to be effective.

Some basics: To prevent cold sores from occurring wash hands often. Maintain a healthful lifestyle (regular exercise, nutritious diet, adequate sleep, keeping stress at bay). Keep lips well moisturized & apply sun screen to the areas that your cold sores normally pop up. Talk with your physician about supplementing with lysine. If you have cold sore blisters it is best not to share eating utensils, chap sticks.
