Not sure you can -: Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus and is transmitted by direct contact. The problem is that the contact doe not have to be with a human. It can be carried on an inanimate object like a fork or spoon, or even a drinking glass. In a perfect world where "clean" means clean you might be safe but in reality you can be exposed to the virus despite your best efforts to avoid it. Good luck -.

Denavir (penciclovir): You cannot really prevent cold sores, but you can cut the time short and even stop them from blistering and getting too big. Most people experience a tingling aura when a cold sore is coming on. If you apply a prescription medication like Denavir (penciclovir) during this early phase and then continue to apply it 4 or 5 times a day in the area, you can stop or shorten the time of a cold sore.
