Emphysematous change means the lung air sacs (alveoli) are distended (air retention after expiration) than normal. This change is common in the elders or in patients with history of chronic obstructive lung disease. Due to the distended alveoli & mismatched ventilation-perfusion, the air exchange is impaired in moderate to severe cases which result in low oxygen in blood (hypoxemia). Take care.
