During the acute phase myocarditis does cause inflammation that will show up on an echocardiogram. If this inflammation doesn't completely resolve during that phase, muscle damage with scarring will permanently be present and demonstrated by subsequent echocardiograms. EKGs can also show the acute and chronic changes. Cardiac MRIs also can visualize certain changes of acute myocarditis&fibrosis.
