Can heart scarring be detected by resting ekg or can only echocardiogram or muga detect heart scarring?

Yes: The art of reading ekgs is age-old. Now in the computerization age, we may "see" even more. There are very specific patterns on ekg which will show if you have had a heart attack in the past, if you have an "electrical wire" bundle shorted out, or even if you have an enlarged heart. A resting ekg gives us a ton of information about your heart. The echo builds on that and gives more specific info.

Yes: Resting ekg may show evidence of prior ischemic event, however size of the area affected is only appreciated on studies like myocardial viability (nuclear), echo or cardiac mri.

Yes: Several tests can help making the diagnosis and evaluating the extent of heart scar tissues such as ekg, echocardiogram, radionuclide ventriculography, myocardial perfusion study ( mibi) or mri. Myocardial perfusion studies with either 99mtc-mibi, 201thallium of 18f-fdg can be very useful not only to detect and evaluate the extent of scar but also evaluating its potential reversibility by surgery.
