The vaccine provides protection for at least 1 to 2 years, so just on that basis you should be fine. Further, the ER would be aware if rabies had been reported in the community, and an infected puppy would not normally be described as "playful."

Staff working in high risk professions get the rabies vaccine as preventative protection. They are usually tested every 2 years to see if any decline in protection has occurred. (as research has found in a fraction by then) I would not consider a questionable exposure to a domestic pet 8 months from a series worthy of a booster or worry.
