The longer he goes without significant brain function improvement, the worse the prognosis is for meaningful brain recovery. A neurologist will look at his EEG ( brain wave test) to determine whether his lower brain ( the automatic part ) is the only part functioning & the cerebral cortex ( the upper part) has no meaningful activity. Meeting with family usually takes place then to discuss plans.

If an EEG study shows no activity, he would likely suffer brain death, and at this point, there would be no reasonable hope of reversal. Do have a conference with his medical team as to the prognosis and future management of this apparently dire situation.
