A member asked:

I recently had an abnormal emg showing moderately severe, chronic l5 polyradiculpathies bilaterally; but normal ncs after suffering l4-5 & l5-s1 disc herniations almost 4 years ago. why would the emg be abnormal, but ncs be normal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

This is not the forum to teach you how to interpret EMGs, but rather to state that the needle electrode portion demonstrated abnormalities consistent with chronic bilateral pinched nerves in the lower back. Since the electrical shock portion (NCS) does not directly test the nerve roots, it was found to be normal. No discrepancies here. Discuss with your doctors.
