Listening to the chest with a stethoscope doesn't tell the MD whether findings of bronchitis or bronchpneumonia is viral or bacterial, but history & symptoms may shed light on the diagnosis. Nevertheless, I think that with abnormal bronchial or lung sounds these warrant a chest X-Ray and probably indicates a need for antibiotics especially if there's fever,sweats,wheezes, or discolored sputum.
