A member asked:

What liver pathway does bactrim get metabolized through and are the compounds active prior to our after liver metabolism?

I'm puzzled why you want such technical information about such a commonly prescribed medication. I think only a pharmacologist can accurately answer your question. Maybe your pharmacist may have some information for you.

Bactrim contains 2 drugs: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Both are active before being metabolized. Trimethoprim mostly ends up in the urine unmetabolized, although some of its metabolites are active. Sulfamethoxazole is metabolized through the cytochrome P450 enzyme pathway (one of the isoenzymes involved is CYP2C19), and its metabolites are not active.
