Typically, during an upper endoscopy, the esophagus that has reflux affecting it looks a certain way and the GI doctor can diagnose this based on this appearance. They likely also took specimens to be certain, for example, there is no infection or even malignancy. You should ask the GI doctor if these specimens were sent to the lab and, if so, what the results were. Good luck!

Generally, gastroenterologists are good at evaluating whether acid reflux is the likely cause of irritation of the esophagus.
