Selecting a rolling backpack versus a shoulder bag or backpack is a smart way to prevent exacerbation of a painful condition. You should also avoid waist bending lifts and pulling activities. Working with a physical therapist may also help strengthen the surrounding muscles in order to minimize pain.

In addition to my colleague's advice, with which I agree, there is one additional approach that might provide a temporary benefit. Wear a sacroiliac belt during your work visits, which can add stability. This is not curative but palliative. Physical therapy and exercise will provide the best relief over time.
