These are cell level changes including structure and function. The definite cause of Dementia is still not known.

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinsonian dementias are associated with the deposition of abnormal proteins and a widespread multiple neurotransmitter deficiency. This is the complex result of the dementing process, but clearly not the cause of this degenerative process. In fact, it remains unclear as to how the process is set in motion.
