I have gastroparesis. my gastro doctor has prescribed me bethanachol 25mg as needed for gastroparesis. i am not a diabetic. i am not sure how i got it. has anyone heard of bethanachol for gastroparesis?

Bethanacol increase the intensity of intestinal contractions, but it does not actually affect gastric emptying directly. It is not usually used as a first line therapy, but sometimes as an adjunctive therapy to other medications. Does it seem to be helping you? If so, it may be worth taking, but you should have discussions with the G.I. doctor about potential side effects. Good luck.

Gastroparesis is a poorly understood/difficult to treat condition and there are limited chemical options with bethanechol being one of them. You do not have to be a diabetic to either have gastroparesis or take bethanechol. Keep a log of your symptoms, report promptly to your prescriber.
