Bethanacol increase the intensity of intestinal contractions, but it does not actually affect gastric emptying directly. It is not usually used as a first line therapy, but sometimes as an adjunctive therapy to other medications. Does it seem to be helping you? Gastroparesis is a poorly understood/difficult to treat condition and there are limited chemical options with bethanechol being one of them. You do not have to be a diabetic to either have gastroparesis or take bethanechol. Keep a log of your symptoms, report promptly to your prescriber.
