Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other acid-related disorders. PPIs are more potent acid suppressors than H2RAs, but they also have a longer duration of action. However, long-term use of PPIs is associated with several adverse effects, increased risk of infections, fractures, and kidney disease.
