This isn't normal. It isn't necessarily serious, but she should be checked. Pediatric ObG probably will see her soon once they understand what the problem is; the pediatrician probably could speak with them to request earlier service. Other option would be to find a pediatrician who specializes in adolescent medicine. Good luck.

New onset menses is often irregular in duration/volume/intervals. The system is often not releasing eggs the first year which is an important part of regulating the pattern. This results in extra estrogen buildup of uterine lining that eventually breaks down in a lengthy/heavy menses. OBGYNS often offer the BCP to pace the pattern for a year or so. She needs to be on supplemental iron for now
