A member asked:

Can an emg/nerve study show no abnormalities despite ongoing pain? does this suggest mild nerve irritation or insignificant nerve pressure that may not be detected by the test? is the test primarily focused on identifying nerve damage?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

An EMG/ NCS reveals abnormal findings due to nerve damage if testing is done at least 4 weeks subsequent to onset, and structural changes to myelin and/ or axon are present. The test will not be useful if the pain is not due to muscle or nerve dysfunction.
