A HIDA scan, hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid, uses a radioactive tracer to assess the function of the liver, bile ducts, and small intestine. The tracer is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream to the liver, where it is taken up by the liver cells and excreted into the bile ducts. The tracer then flows into the small intestine where it can be detected by a special camera.
