Thrombocytosis is an abnormal increase in the number of blood platelets. Primary thrombocytosis, (thrombocythemia) is a rare disorder when the bone marrow produces too many platelets. Secondary thrombocytosis, a reactive condition occurs as a result of an underlying medical condition or certain medications. To know your doctor will perform a series of tests, blood and bone marrow biopsy.

You do not know until a cause is found. Secondary thrombocytosis is much more common, cause sometimes becomes apparent in time, a hematologist would be best to conduct work up in case needed.
