Can smashing hard disks or cell phones with hammer (and/or put them in soap and water before) lead to the release of toxic carcinogenic substances? can breaking cd-roms lead to release of toxic carcinog. subst? done this (in open air). hope it's ok?

If the hard disks are also CDs, they are small and even if toxic substances are released, they would be small amounts in the open air so you would not be inhaling very much, if at all. You could further protect yourself by wearing some type of respirator, even an N95 mask that fits tightly would offer more protection. Good luck to you!
