The stomach normally is acidic. If the dynamics are right for some of the stomach fluid to get into the esophagus, then you have GERD. To prevent GERD, eat smaller meals, have a low-fat diet, avoid caffeine beverages, avoid alcohol, avoid chocolate, avoid mints. Also do not lay down for at least 2 hours after a meal and do not eat anything late in the evening an maintain an ideal weight.
