A member asked:

Is gerd caused by low stomach acid or high stomach acid? i don't eat spicy/fried foods, no caffeine/nicotine, no cold drinks but still i'm suffering from 2 months with gerd. someone said les not close with low stomach acid and leads to gerd. guide me?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

GERD is triggered when ANY STOMACH ACID is pushed back into the swallow tube by the normal squeezing/mixing action of the stomach. The lower the acid value the less likely it will irritate when it backwashes. The LES is a fold in the tube, not a valve. Its weakness can be a normal variant or aggravated by some foods & chemicals like caffeine & nicotine which keep it loose.
