How can i help my baby breathe when she has a runny nose?

Suction and humidity: Babies cannot blow into kleenex the way we do with a congested nose, so we basically have to perform this for them. I recommend bringing your baby into the bathroom and turning the shower on hot. Hold your baby there while the bathroom gets steamy- this will help soften the mucus. Then using suction (blue bulb or nasal aspirator) suck the mucus from his/her nose.

Supportive care: Elevating their heads (a car seat angle is good) & using a cool mist humidifier can help. (be sure to clean the humidifier daily - mold grows fast.) also, make sure they drink plenty to keep hydrated, use a bulb syringe to gently suction the secretions from their nose, and use nasal saline drops to help clear the passages. (your doc can help you learn how if you aren't familiar with using these.).

Saline & suction: Nasal saline spray is very helpful to clear your baby's stuffy nose. If there is a lot of mucus, gently suctioning the nostrils with a bulb syringe will help to removed the drainage. Also, a cool mist humidifier with plain water may help your breathing at night when she is sleeping.

Spray & suction: Using an over-the-counter "saline spray" will help thin the discharge and then suctioning with a "bulb syringe" will help remove it from her nose.

Bulb suction, saline: Bulb suctioning and saline nose drops are the safest way to help your baby's runny nose. The simplest one often works best (a red rubber suctioner often given in the hospital after birth). A humidifier can be helpful sometimes as well. Ask your pediatrician to demonstrate how to use the bulb suctioner if you are uncertain.

Nasal saline drops: Babies ages 3-12 months can easily catch colds from other people. If there is just a runny nose, without much fussiness, without any high fever, without other worrisome symptoms, then parents can leave the nose alone. The runny nose will get well on its own in most cases. If the mucous is blocking the nose somewhat, try a few drops of saline, followed by gentle suctioning with a suction bulb.

Bulb syringe, suction: Squeeze the the bulb, place the tip in your baby's nostril and then loosen the grip but keep the syringe in place. This will create and suction and remove the mucus.

Humidity and fluids: Cough and cold medicines are generally not recommended for children especially children under 4 years. Giving extra fluids by mouth helps to liquify the secretions as does a humidifier. Saline nose drops with suction if needed helps to clear the nasal passages making it easier for the baby to breath. The cold will resolve by itself in 7 to 10 days.
