Does sweet oil help with helping baby to breathe properly? baby is two weeks old and seems to have a blocked and dry nose.

No oils: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.

No oil: Oil may be aspirated into the lungs and it is not recommended. Very often newborns will have a form of congestion which is unrelated to infection. Nasal saline rinses may be used to relieve congestion. If the baby has a low grade fever, please see your PCP right away.
