These can remain in the nasal mucus and attract an outpouring of more, setting up a fine environment for simple nasal bacteria to grow and create an infection. If you notice more drainage and a smell that won't go away it is likely the cause. A good nasal rinse out with nasal saline designed for such wash outs would be a good thing to do.
