A member asked:

Can years of depression/anxiety literally change the brain? i suddenly got epilepsy some years ago and i wonder if it can be because ive had anxiety for many years - that the anxiety somehow affected my brain, which led me to develop epilepsy?

Depression and anxiety are not the cause of idiopathic epilepsy. However, seizure activity may be triggered with hyperventilation during a severe anxiety attack. Take care.

Emotional dysfunction, such as depression or anxiety do NOT cause epilepsy. Indeed quite the reverse, as many epileptics suffer more intense emotional disorders associated with the seizure disorder, especially those with a history of complex partial seizures.
