HIV PCR testing has been shown to be 100% sensitive for detecting early HIV infection between 10-15 days from exposure (AIDS. 2002;16(8):1119.). A negative (Normal) HIV PCR at two weeks would be a good rule-out of acute HIV infection. There is a small false positive rate so a positive result needs additional confirmation testing.
