All my paps smears and hpv have been negative for 40 years and no sexual activity. . now hpv is saying out of range. could this be a false positive?

"Out of range" isn't typical terminology for an HPV DNA test, but it probably means no HPV DNA was detected i.e. a normal negative result, not false positive.

The HPV virus can stay dormant in your body for years, with or without sexual activity. You should not worry, but have another test and consult with your PCP no matter the results.
