Tiny noses: Babies have tiny nasal passages & a relatively short neck, which prevents them from mouth breathing when congested unless they arch their head back in an uncomfortable position. Until their neck grows an inch or so, their nose is their airway & dust, perfumes, smoke etc make it run & congested. Washing it out with nasal saline removes the irritants & the mucous blockage. If worried see her dr.

Workup/mgt: Babies breathe through their noses. Sometimes there can be prolonged congestion following birth. Baby nasal saline and gently suctioning can remove mucus, but if this is interfering with their feeding, growth, sleep pattern or breathing, the baby may need an imaging study. There are conditions in which the nasal passages are anatomically narrowed.
