A member asked:

I am getting an mri of the lumbar spine. i have hip pain that wakes me at night on both sides and i am wondering if the mri will show the femoral heads as well. i also have sciatica on the left side and pain going to the front as if in the groin?

From the cited pain symptoms, I expect the study will show a degenerative process of the spine with narrowing of the outlets for nerves exiting the spine. The narrowing pinches the nerve roots & leads to pain/dysfunction. The study helps define the options for correction. (Surgical)

It is not unusual for a 59 yo to have both degenerative disease of lumbosacral spines and hips. An MRI of the lumbar spine does not image the hip joints, as a dedicated hip study is needed for that purpose. Discuss with an orthopedic surgeon as to the wisdom of obtaining additional studies.
