Either oral or genital herpes (HSV) is very contagious, and can be passed between sexual partners. There can be long intervals between symptoms (painful ulcers, either orally or genital) which are usually activated by stressful incidents.

Genital herpes is only from sex. There are several possible explanations, but all depend on more detail: what symptoms you had and when, what kind of test(s) were done, your bf's symptoms and test results. Specific sexual practices also are important (vaginal/anal vs oral sex), and virus type (HSV1 or 2). It's common for herpes to first show up a year into a sexual relationship.
